On 4 October 1926, Léona Delcourt, known as Nadja, chanced upon André Breton on the Rue La Fayette. She became the heroine of the eponymous novel by the "pope of Surrealism", published as early as 1928, yet her own writings and drawings have only just been published. In Léona D.
La femme cachée derrière le mythe de Nadja (Éditions des femmes-Antoinette Fouque, 2026), Ella Balaert brings back to life the forgotten figure of this iconic muse.
Blending personal narrative with biographical research based on Léona Delcourt's letters, the author explores the condition of women at the time and the singular life of Léona, a rebellious and inspiring spirit, who was confined to an asylum for thirteen years until her death in 1941.
Ella Balaert is a novelist, short-story writer, playwright and poet. She has published some twenty books, including the short story collection Poissons rouges et autres bêtes aussi féroces (des femmes-Antoinette Fouque, 2020), which won the Prix Boccace 2021.
A normalienne holding the agrégation, she has worked in various jobs before devoting herself entirely to literature, through the workshops she runs and the authors' associations she takes part in.
