Improvisation and contemporary jazz
Overview
Improvisation and contemporary jazz
This concert is organised as part of the Muzzix & Associés highlight event, which takes place in the Lille metropolitan area from 18th September to 22nd October 2026.
Alister Spence & Tony Buck (AU) Two Accomplices in Improvisation For over thirty years, pianist Alister Spence and drummer Tony Buck have followed parallel trajectories within the international improvised music scene, regularly reuniting through collaborations that have fostered a deep musical complicity.
Both share a fascination for subterranean rhythms, slowly unfolding forms, the most subtle interactive play, and a constant attention to sound as living matter. United as a duo, they explore a territory where instantaneous composition and mutual listening merge.
Each piece is born from a dialogue of rare intensity, capable of moving with remarkable fluidity from vast abstract landscapes to incisive rhythmic impulses, or from long contemplative breaths to an almost jubilant energy.
Whatever direction they take, their music always finds its own logic, revealing a form of obviousness in the unexpected.
Their first album, Mythographer, hailed as one of the best records of 2023 by The New York City Jazz Record, confirmed the exceptional quality of this encounter.
Critics celebrate a “telepathic” dialogue between two major musical personalities, capable of inventing a common language of rare freedom at every moment. A second recording, made live in Berlin in 2025, will be released at the end of 2026.
An emblematic figure of the trio The Necks, Tony Buck finds here a more stripped-down format, where each gesture finds an immediate echo in Alister Spence's sensitive and inventive playing.
Together, they give birth to music in perpetual motion, demanding without ever losing its self-evidence, where listening becomes the true engine of creation. Stefan Orins New Trio (FR – Muzzix) A nou
