Œdipe Roi after Sophocles

Considered the tragedy of tragedies, Sophocles' Œdipe roi is one of the earliest instances of incest in European literature. Behind the founding myth of Western theatre, a blind spot nevertheless remains: real incest and its millions of singular victims. What can art do in the face of incest? And what does incest, in turn, do to art, to the image and to language? The question is all the more pressing because silence is precisely what the "culture of incest" relies on to secure its impunity and perpetuate itself, generation after generation. Through a personal and historical investigation of great emotional force, weaving together the history of psychoanalysis and the social sciences with a meditation on the art of theatre, Eddy D’aranjo continues his search for a renewed political theatre that blends performance and documentary, two regimes of truth in the service of an art determined to show the real as it is, for what it is.
