Arromanches, 6 June 1944: as the Allies gain a foothold on European soil, a knackerman father is preoccupied with marrying his daughter to the German soldier she has been sleeping with for four years… This summary will give you only a faint idea of the burlesque effervescence of this “anarchist vaudeville”. A farce on a serious subject that caused a scandal upon its creation in 1950. A crazy gamble in a society undergoing reconstruction, bruised and traumatised by the violence of war. In 2026, it is important to do justice to this play and to question the place of war in our societies and its consequences. The Second World War, the central subject of the play, resonates particularly well with our current geopolitical concerns: Brexit marking the end of a united Europe, the war in Ukraine, the end of Pax Americana, the rise of fascism worldwide, etc. Resurrecting this historical period and its conflict with our contemporary perspective allows for a detached and pragmatic re-reading to be paralleled with our own future. In a climate of widespread wars, many fear a third world war.
