Overview
PEER GYNT - BALLETLE LATVIAN NATIONAL BALLET Peer Gynt – a contemporary ballet between dream and reality
19 to 21 February 2027 After many years' absence, the Latvian National Ballet returns to France to perform Peer Gynt, a creation by Edward Clug, set to the celebrated melodies of Edvard Grieg.
Inspired by the play by Henrik Ibsen, Peer Gynt is a narrative ballet that takes the audience on a whimsical, fairy-tale odyssey, following a man's passage into adulthood.
Peer Gynt is an anti-hero torn between ambition and cowardice, dream and reality. From the mountains of Norway to the deserts of Africa, he travels the world in search of himself, piling up adventures, fantastical encounters and illusions. Shameless lies allow him to escape reality, turning his morally dubious adventures into heroic deeds. Peer Gynt stubbornly pursues his dreams on an initiatory journey that is sometimes strange, but deeply human.
With its distinctive choreographic language, blending dramatic power, psychological subtlety and striking imagery, Edward Clug offers a modern reading of the work. The visually powerful tableaux, combined with one of the most famous scores in the repertoire, make up a vibrant show that appeals as much to dance lovers as to newcomers.
The international success of this creation continues to confirm its status as a major work of the contemporary repertoire: Peer Gynt has been performed by the greatest dance companies around the world, notably the Ballet of La Scala in Milan, the Vienna State Opera Ballet, and the Zürich Ballet.
A show with an intoxicating, surreal universe full of self-deprecating humour, where dance, music and myth come together to bring to life one of the greatest tales of Nordic literature.
