After a somewhat wild youth, Doctor Moulineaux leads a quiet and respectable life with his wife Yvonne. But, caught up by his old demons, Moulineaux has spent the night away from home to meet the beautiful Suzanne Aubin, one of his patients, at the Bal de l'Opéra.

He has come off badly, for despite the clumsy diversions of his manservant Étienne, Yvonne has discovered everything! In order to shield his new adulterous affair from prying eyes, Moulineaux then decides to rent a small mezzanine flat formerly occupied by a dressmaker.

But his respite is short-lived.

Barely settled in with his mistress, our respected doctor sees a procession of visitors, as eccentric as they are unwelcome, arrive, at any moment risking giving the game away: a cuckolded husband, a mother-in-law, the landlord, the ice queen and former clients of the dressmaker.
