Overview
Through her photo exhibition, Marta Nascimento takes us to Mexico, where she captured the intensity of the Day of the Dead, somewhere between quiet reflection and joyful public celebration. A sensitive immersion into one of Latin America's most emblematic rituals.
In our Éphémère Galerie of Comptoir des Voyages and along rue Saint-Victor in Paris, discover Día de Muertos, the exhibition by artist Marta Nascimento.
A native of Rio de Janeiro, Marta Nascimento studied journalism before heading to the Amazon to report on the social tensions of this unique region.
For twenty years, she followed the economic and social upheavals in Latin America and Europe, shedding light on the repercussions of globalisation. Her work has been published in the French and international press.
Alongside this, she explores new narrative forms and makes video stories that question our place in a changing world. Every year, from the last days of October, Mexico begins to celebrate Día de Muertos, a blend of pre-Hispanic heritage and Catholic tradition.
Far from being sad, this festival, inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list, is lived as an explosion of life: altars laden with offerings, garlands of marigolds, calavera face paint, vigils and processions… Families reunite with their departed loved ones.
A distinctly their own way of taming death and honouring those who are no longer here. Convinced that this ritual is a valuable gateway to the Mexican soul, Comptoir des Voyages invited the photographer to set out and discover it, camera in hand.
That journey gave rise to images that capture the collective fervour as much as the intimacy of families. We welcome you at the Éphémère Galerie, 12 rue Saint-Victor, Paris 5e. 30pm. 30pm. 30pm. Closed on Sundays.
