Overview
Everyone knows Don Quichotte, but almost nobody has read Don Quichotte"!
This line from the show sums up our intention: to stage a play about Don Quixote that would make audiences want to plunge into this novel, while shedding light both on literary creation and on the life of Cervantes, and on the importance of the book as an object.
Staging Don Quixote means tackling the most published book after the Bible! Staging Don Quixote means bringing to the stage the most famous fictional character in all of humanity!
But staging Don Quixote is also a tribute to its author and to his thoroughly novelistic life: Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra! Our production presents the famous hidalgo, that wandering knight and his squire, but the main character is Cervantes; or more precisely, his book!
We therefore immerse audiences in the city of Madrid at the beginning of the seventeenth century, in the life of this celebrated author and in the tradition, at that time, of reading books aloud, as the essential means of passing on printed works.
The writing and structure of our play mirror the madness of Don Quixote and his world peopled with enchanters, a "whimsical" journey between reality and fiction.
But our play is also a tribute to Cervantes' literary inventions and to his talent for surprising readers in the two novels that make up his masterwork!
Our show is not a historical reconstruction, even though it gives audiences the keys to understanding what literature was during the Golden Age, the life of Cervantes and the extraordinary novel Don Quixote turned out to be!
It is an original show, both referential and resolutely modern, in which space and time are deconstructed, and whose aim is to entertain audiences of all kinds, just as Cervantes wished with his two books that introduced Don Quixote to the world.
