Overview
Have you ever wondered what a mineral is or how it forms? You'll find all the answers to these questions at the Geology and Mineralogy Gallery. Nearly 600 remarkable mineral treasures are on display at the Geology and Mineralogy Gallery, including 20 giant crystals.
You'll arrive to see giant quartz crystals, each weighing two to three tons, and large geodes containing thousands of tiny amethyst crystals. Learn more about them through a film that traces their discovery in Brazil to their arrival at the museum in 1983.
Besides the natural wonders of pure minerals, you'll have the chance to see some rare crown jewels, including Louis XIV's great sapphire, Charles X's great opal, and Alexander I's diamond-encrusted snuffbox.
While dazzling beauty is certainly on display, you'll also have the opportunity to discover fascinating aspects of how these rare stones are formed. Get up close to amazing minerals and gemstones.
