Based on Brecht's play, a lucid and implacable portrayal of the rise of totalitarianism, Julie Duclos creates a major production of striking topicality, which alerts us to the fragility of our democracies. Between 1935 and 1938, in an Germany led by Hitler, playwright Bertolt Brecht dissects the fascist mechanism at work in daily life. Rather than denouncing spectacular violence, he reveals the insidious effects of authoritarianism: distrust, denunciation, self-censorship, the fear that transforms and deforms even the most intimate bonds. With a dozen adult performers and two children, Julie Duclos brings to life the polyphony of a society haunted by suspicion. The elegant and minimalist set design, interspersed with archive images, cinema, real sounds and music, creates a continuous flow between each scene, like a film.
