Based on Brecht's play, a lucid and relentless portrait of the rise of totalitarianism, Julie Duclos has created a major production of striking topicality, which warns us of the fragility of our democracies. Between 1935 and 1938, in a Germany led by Hitler, the playwright Bertolt Brecht dissects the fascist machinery at work in daily life. Rather than denouncing spectacular violence, he reveals the insidious effects of authoritarianism: distrust, informing, self-censorship, and fear, which transforms and distorts bonds right down to the most intimate ones.

With a dozen adult performers and two children, Julie Duclos brings to life the polyphony of a society haunted by suspicion. The elegant, stripped-back set, crossed with archive images, film, real sounds and music, creates a continuous flow between each scene, in the manner of a film. And behind History, it is our unsettling present that calls out to us.
