Overview

Les Arts Florissants and the French grand motet: this is a love story far from over! If the ensemble has largely contributed to its rediscovery, it is also this repertoire that made it known, from its founding in 1979.

As its name suggests, the grand motet is an extension or enlargement of the motet, or petit motet, closer to the cantata. Much more sumptuous, the grand motet calls for a double choir, or a large choir.

It is an exclusively French genre, though its establishment is owed to an Italian, Lully. After him, Delalande, Charpentier, Campra and Mondonville had its finest hours.

But today the genre is also inseparable from Les Arts Florissants: it is impossible indeed to list here the masterpieces they revealed to their audience.

In 46 years of existence, there is hardly a season during which William Christie and his musicians have not brought to light a new gem from this repertoire.
