The Arod Quartet, which won the prestigious ARD Competition in 2016, plays as a preamble to this concert placed under the sign of friendship Beethoven's String Quartet No. 4, a work particularly well received in its time, much to the composer's exasperation, rarely satisfied.
French music next, with Debussy's Sonata for Violin and Piano, a partition of whimsical outburst, then Ravel's dazzling Tzigane, one of his most deliberately virtuosic pages.
Franck's Quintet imposes a monumental conclusion: dramatic music, eminently expressive, which did not greatly please its dedicatee, Camille Saint-Saëns. Reservations swept away by Debussy, who heard "true music" in it.
