Overview
The famous Stabat Mater, which Pergolesi completed just before his death, achieved almost universal fame as early as the mid-eighteenth century. For its beauty alone, the opening duet could have guaranteed the immortality of its composer. By contrast, Vivaldi's motet In furore iustissimae irae expresses divine wrath through breathless, virtuosic writing. As for the Nisi Dominus, it is a masterpiece of chiaroscuro, and it offers a moment of unreal suspension with the Cum dederit. Unmatched in this repertoire, Julia Lezhneva joins her voice with that of Maarten Engeltjes for the Stabat Mater, accompanied by the ensemble PRJCT Amsterdam.
