Two neighbouring aristocrats are nursing a broken heart and seem inconsolable. Their despair draws them closer, but their pride prevents them from admitting their love to one another. The clumsy meddling of rivals and servants then plunges them into an inextricable muddle. La Seconde Surprise is the second, self-contained part of two comedies in which Marivaux portrays the explosive coexistence of touchiness and love. This is an opportunity for us to reunite with Ronan Rivière and the collective La Voix des Plumes, in a pastoral setting and costumes straight out of a Watteau painting. The music of Poulenc, performed by Olivier Mazal on piano, underscores the play's love intrigue, so skilfully constructed that it becomes at once comic and despairing. For this is the game and the lesson of this Seconde Surprise: a tragicomic muddle in which everyone comes to grief, yet love triumphs.
