Two neighbouring aristocrats are grieving a lost love and seem inconsolable. Their despair draws them together, but their pride prevents them from confessing their love to one another. The clumsy meddling of rivals and servants plunges them into an inextricable muddle.
Here Marivaux illustrates the explosive coexistence of touchiness and love. Pretty words, elegant killer phrases and convoluted circumlocutions ultimately only bring out a crude yet touching humanity, under the mocking gaze of the servants.
