What sound rings out when you realise you have reached the future you have always been reaching towards?

On "False Dogs", her fifth album, Marika Hackman explores the full palette of emotions felt when crossing those milestones of life that we imagined as children. Produced, arranged and written by Marika herself, "False Dogs" is her most accomplished and most moving album to date: an intimate record about the beauty and anxieties of the malaise of one's thirties. As the hedonistic romanticism of one's twenties fades, the harsh reality of grief and a deeper understanding of the passing of time make their appearance. The album refers to the imaginary worlds we often dreamed of as children: those structures and "false gods" we believed in blindly and which we so easily set aside with the wisdom that age brings. The playful misspelling of "False Dogs" is a nod to the shifting nature of our dreams, our desires and our systems of belief. "Life follows an arc that runs from carefree childhood to unbridled adolescence, through the madness of one's twenties, then marriage, children, work, responsibilities... but in reality, that is not what life is. Life is joy, sorrow, anxiety, love and the small moments – all those things that lie between these stages we perceive as milestones", explains Marika.
