Overview
PHEDRE By: Jean Racine Direction and set design: Jean-Yves Brignon Assisted by: Sophie Cohen Cast: Amine Chaïb, Nina Cruveiller, Suzanne Legrand, Charles TesnièreAges 12 and up Running time: 1h50 Phèdre, wife of Thésée, believes he is dead. Freed by this news, she lets herself confess to Hippolyte, her stepson, the guilty passion she feels for him. This confession soon puts Phèdre in an untenable position: not only does Hippolyte reject her, but
Thésée, who had simply disappeared, soon returns.
Phèdre is then driven to lie by her confidante OEnone.
She accuses Hippolyte of having tried to force her.
Thésée curses his son and calls down Neptune's wrath upon him, but soon the news of OEnone's suicide casts doubt on his mind.
Yet it is too late. Thésée learns of Hippolyte's death, killed by a sea monster, while Phèdre, who has poisoned herself, reveals the truth about this tragedy before dying, confessing her fault.
