Overview
Fauré's Requiem in D minor, op. 48...
Fauré's Requiem in D minor, op. 48, written in his mature period, stands as one of his most celebrated works.
Premiered on 16 January 1888 at the Church of the Madeleine, this mass for the dead is considered one of the masterpieces of Fauré's catalog and among the most beautiful requiems of the 19th century.
Its deeply personal writing contains several movements ranked among the most moving in Western choral music. Racine's Cantique, op. 11, is a vocal piece composed in 1865 by the 19-year-old Fauré.
Written for choir (soprano, alto, tenor, bass) with piano or organ in D-flat major, it opens with an introduction at the keyboard before the choir enters section by section.
At measure forty, a modulating central section intervenes in A-flat major (then B-flat minor), where the work reaches its highest expressive level. Through a slow and solemn return, the piece evolves back to its original character.
Dedicated to César Franck, the score won first prize in composition at the Paris Niedermeyer School competition. Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major, titled "Eroica", op. 55, stands among his most landmark works.
Composed 1803–1804, it premiered publicly on 7 April 1805 at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna. Initially dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte, the dedication was withdrawn when he proclaimed himself emperor.
Beethoven then dedicated it to the memory of "a great man" before officially consecrating it to his patron, Prince Lobkowitz.
Through its unprecedented scale, expressive power, and heroic ideals, the Eroica marks a major break with classicism and heralds the advent of musical Romanticism.
