Dido and Aeneas is undoubtedly the most emblematic of English operas. Inspired by an ancient myth, it tells the tragic loves of Dido, Queen of Carthage, and Trojan hero Aeneas.
The score is one of Purcell's most famous, even though it was little appreciated by audiences of the time. It's one of the shortest operas in music history, and that's what gives it all its strength. By condensing the plot, Purcell intensifies the dramatic intensity.
