Overview
Dido and Aeneas is without doubt the most emblematic of English operas. Inspired by an ancient myth, it tells the tragic love story of Dido, Queen of Carthage, and the Trojan hero Aeneas. The score is one of Purcell's most celebrated, even though it was little appreciated by audiences of the time. It is one of the shortest operas in the history of music, and this is what gives it all its power. By condensing the plot, Purcell heightens the dramatic intensity all the more. The influences are mixed, combining a majestic French-style overture with Italian lyricism. Counted among today's most remarkable baroque ensembles, Vox Luminis will do full justice to this masterpiece.
