Django Reinhardt.

Jean Reinhardt, better known as Django Reinhardt, pronounced [d͡ʒãŋɡo ʁɛjnaʁt] or [d͡ʒɑ̃ɡo ʁenɑʁt], was a French jazz guitarist born on 23 January 1910 in Liberchies — today a section of the municipality of Pont-à-Celles — in the province of Hainaut, near the city of Charleroi, Belgium, and who died on 16 May 1953 in Fontainebleau. His playing and composition style attracted followers, giving birth to a distinct jazz style, Gypsy jazz.

Coming from a Sinti family, commonly called “Manouche” in France, he remains today one of the most respected and influential guitarists in the history of jazz. Seriously injured in a caravan fire at the age of 18, he carried the scars of his burns on his left hand throughout his life, forcing him to find a new technique and to play in such a unique style that his followers in subsequent generations went so far as to idolise him by tying their fingers to reproduce his infirmity and technique.

Several of his descendants became guitarists: Lousson Reinhardt, his eldest son from a first marriage (1929-1992), Babik Reinhardt, his second son (1944-2001), and David Reinhardt, his grandson (Babik's son), as well as Levis Adel-Baumgartner, a descendant of Lousson.
