About — The artist
Edmond Rostand, born on 1 April 1868 in Marseille and died on 2 December 1918 in Paris, was a French writer, dramatist, poet and essayist.
He is the author of one of the most celebrated plays in French theatre, Cyrano de Bergerac. His work bears the influence of Victor Hugo and Théodore de Banville, "of whom he was the most popular but also the most controversial heir".
His wife was the poet Rosemonde Gérard, and he was the father of the biologist and French academician Jean Rostand and of the poet and playwright Maurice Rostand.
