About — The artist
The Orchestre Lamoureux is a French symphony orchestra based in Paris. It played for many years at the Salle Pleyel, as well as at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, the Salle Gaveau and the Théâtre du Châtelet.
Founded in 1881 by Charles Lamoureux under the name Société des nouveaux concerts, it was originally created to promote new music to a wide audience, in particular the music of Richard Wagner.
Building on this heritage, the Orchestre Lamoureux went on to specialise in French music, of which it is today one of the foremost exponents. Having premiered several major works of the French repertoire (the concert version of Ravel's Boléro and his Piano Concerto in G major, Debussy's La Mer, Chabrier's España, etc.), it continues this repertoire tradition.
An association-run orchestra since 1897, it has been recognised as a public-interest organisation since 1961. It is subsidised by the DRAC Île-de-France and the City of Paris, and receives support from patrons.
The orchestra recruits its permanent musicians by competition from among music professionals and currently numbers 89 members.
