Within two vast collections of preludes and fugues (1722 and 1744), he systematically explores all the possibilities offered by equal temperament, born just decades earlier.
He seizes on the improvised character of the prelude while giving it remarkable breadth through inventiveness and polyphonic richness. As for the fugue, an ancient, architecturally supreme form, he renews its possibilities with astonishing diversity.
One thing is certain: a sense of absolute freedom reigns throughout the Well-Tempered Clavier. The score has established itself over the centuries as the bedside book of the greatest keyboard music figures: Mozart, Chopin and Schumann.
