About — The artist
Pussy Riot (literally meaning “riot of pussies,” in English) is a Russian feminist punk rock group from Moscow. Formed in 2011, the collective staged unauthorized art performances in Moscow to promote women's rights in Russia and, in 2012, to oppose Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's campaign for the presidential election.
Following a performance deemed blasphemous (a “punk prayer”) in an Orthodox church, three members were sentenced on 17 August 2012 to two years' imprisonment in a labor camp for vandalism and incitement to religious hatred. Ekaterina Samutsevich was released in September 2012. Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina regained their freedom in December 2013.
