About — The artist

Shamshi Kaldayakov (15 August 1930 – 29 February 1992) was a Kazakh composer. Born Şämşı Donbaev, he ran away from school and changed his name to evade the police. He began playing music at the age of 17 and wrote mainly waltz-style songs.

In 1956, he composed the music for the patriotic song ‘My Kazakhstan’. After some changes to the lyrics, it was adopted in 2006 as the national anthem of Kazakhstan by President Nursultan Nazarbayev.
