About — The artist

Anna Mae Bullock, known as Tina Turner, born on 26 November 1939 in Brownsville (Tennessee, United States) and died on 24 May 2023 in Küsnacht (Canton of Zurich, Switzerland), was an American-Swiss singer, songwriter, and actress.

Her consistent contributions to rock music earned her the title of "Queen of Rock & Roll". In addition to rock, she also excelled in rhythm and blues, soul, dance, and pop.

Tina Turner began her career with Ike Turner's Kings of Rhythm in 1957, then as part of the duo Ike and Tina Turner. The latter achieved success with hits like River Deep, Mountain High and Proud Mary (which won a Grammy Award) before disbanding in 1976. In the 1980s, Tina Turner made one of the greatest comebacks in music history. Her multi-platinum album Private Dancer (1984) featured the hit song What's Love Got to Do with It, which won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year and became her first and only No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. At 44, she was the oldest female solo artist to achieve this feat. Her success continued with other tracks such as We Don't Need Another Hero (1985), The Best (1989), and GoldenEye (1995).

Tina Turner is one of the world's most popular artists, with estimated sales of over 180 million records. She had seven Top 10 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 and sixteen Top 10 R&B singles. In the United Kingdom, she had thirty-three Top 40 entries on the UK Singles Chart, and all her albums since Private Dancer reached number one. Along with Diana Ross and Aretha Franklin, she is considered one of the most influential African-American singers of the 20th century. She was the first Black artist and the first woman to grace the cover of Rolling Stone magazine, which ranked her among the 100 greatest artists of all time and the 100 greatest singers of all time. She was inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, with Ike Turner in 1991 and as a solo artist in 2021. She won 12 Grammy Awards, including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and was a recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors in 2005. She also has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the St. Louis Walk of Fame.

During her Break Every Rule World Tour, she set a Guinness World Record in January 1988 at the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro for the largest paying concert for a solo artist, with 180,000 spectators. Tina Turner is also, according to the Guinness World Records, the artist who has sold the most concert tickets in music history for a solo artist (approximately 200 million tickets sold). In 2009, Turner retired after completing her Tina!: 50th Anniversary Tour, which was one of the most lucrative tours of the 2000s.

Tina Turner was also an actress, starring in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome and Last Action Hero. In 1993, a biopic titled Tina was adapted from her autobiography I, Tina: My Life Story.
