Ariel Tessier - Drumming Mandala

Drawing equally on African traditional percussion ensembles, contemporary music, repetitive and minimalist, and broadly improvisational music, this solo drum piece is above all conceived as a sensory and physical experience, an immersion in suspended and vibrant time, rich in textures and sounds, intertwined notes.

Through the repetition of a gesture, a world appears, a song, a trance, but it is constantly destined to transform and evolve through games of speed superimpositions, "morphing" fractures.

This solo is a search for the principle of the Mandala applied to the drums; to open a world that unfolds with its own cohesion, a chaos that orders itself with its peripheral asperities and its center, all united in a unitary principle, that of the circle.

To seek and deploy the infinite possibilities of the drums too often perceived as a static accompaniment instrument to a piece to (re)discover its rhythmic power but also and especially its melodic, orchestral and textural power, such is the challenge for this solo drum piece played by drummer Ariel Tessier.
