CHRISTMAS AT THE CHAPELLE ROYALE
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)
Christmas Oratorio
Friday 11 December, 8pm
Chapelle Royale
Running time: 3h, interval included
Cappella Mediterranea continues its exploration of the sacred repertoire with Johann Sebastian Bach's Christmas Oratorio, composed in Leipzig in 1734. This cycle of six cantatas, tracing the episodes of the Nativity from the birth of Christ to the Adoration of the Magi, alternates recitatives, arias and choruses, blending narration, meditation and collective intervention by the choir in a spirit of light, joy and hope. For this production, Cappella Mediterranea joins forces with the prestigious Nederlands Kamerkoor. This collaboration brings together complementary artistic forces around a major work of the repertoire and gives rise to a European tour in the run-up to Christmas.
