Checked on 26 October 2026.
Overview
In 1797, Cherubini's Médée triumphs in Paris. Its overture has a turbulent character and passionate outbursts that were bound to make a strong impression on the first generation of Romantics. Mendelssohn distils the same blend of pathos and heroism in his Symphony No. 3 or his Violin Concerto. In 1829, he travels through the British Isles and brings back from his journey the first sketches of his symphony known as the « Écossaise ». After more than ten years in the making, the work triumphs in 1842. Its melancholic aura suggests the island mists, occasionally dispelled by the recollection of a bagpipe tune. Mendelssohn also works on his concerto over several years. The attention paid to the smallest details justifies its place among the masterpieces of the genre.
