Overview
In 1797, Cherubini's Médée triumphed in Paris. Its overture presents a tumultuous character and passionate outbursts that deeply impressed the first Romantic generation. Mendelssohn distils a similar blend of pathos and heroism in his Symphony No. 3 or his Violin Concerto. In 1829, he travelled across the British Isles and brought back the first sketches of his so-called “Scottish” Symphony from his journey. After more than ten years of gestation, the work triumphed in 1842. Its melancholic aura suggests island mists, occasionally dispelled by the reminiscence of a bagpipe tune. Mendelssohn also worked on his concerto for several years. The attention paid to the smallest details justifies its belonging among the masterpieces of the genre.
