A conservatory in a unique setting

The Hôtel Gouthière, emblematic of late 18th-century neo-classicism, has housed the 10th arrondissement conservatory since 1981. It is the last trace of a much larger complex built at the request of Pierre Gouthière, a gilder-chaser from the end of the Ancien Régime, in the heart of the then rapidly urbanising Faubourg Saint-Martin. The surviving pavilion reflects the 18th-century vogue for "petites maisons" of pleasure or income. It retains beautiful antique-inspired decorations. After Pierre Gouthière's bankruptcy in 1784, his still unfinished residence was acquired by his notary, Nicolas Arnoul. In the early 20th century, a passementerie manufacturer, then other artisans, still occupied the premises. For the occasion, the conservatory offers a concert with a great instrumental diversity!
