Ludwig van Beethoven

Concerto for violin and orchestra in D major, op. 61 (1806)

Romance for violin and orchestra no. 2 in F major, op. 50 (1798)

Joseph Haydn

Symphony no. 99 in E flat major, Hob. I:99 (1793)

Carried by the marvellous Antje Weithaas, two pieces by Beethoven place the violin in a particular light. The Concerto op. 61, of a scale unprecedented for its time, moves forward with a calm assurance. The soloist does not impose a discourse over the ensemble but lets it circulate, bends it and widens it. The celebrated German virtuoso will have the opportunity to demonstrate her consummate art of balance and of managing long phrases. Briefer, the Romance no. 2 concentrates that same quality of line within a weightless, almost intimate cantilena, where the orchestra is reduced to the essentials. Here one hears another face of Beethoven, made of restrained eloquence, which moves through its very simplicity.

Haydn, finally, closes the evening with the Symphony no. 99, which belongs to the London series and unfolds an art of orchestral theatre that is anything but decorative. Sovereign energy, surprises of texture, the pleasure of detail... In short, an occasion to show that Classicism has nothing to envy Romanticism! Do not miss the chance to meet Holly Hyun Choe after the performance!
