TOMÁS LUIS DE VICTORIA

Tenebræ Responsories

Alongside Palestrina, Victoria stands out as the greatest genius of sacred polyphony of the sixteenth century. Born in Spain and trained in Rome, he returned to his native land with, in his baggage, an absolute mastery of counterpoint into which he infused a distinctly Spanish expressiveness. He left behind a body of work of remarkable scope, both in its quantity and in its poetic richness, within which a substantial corpus of Responsories stands out. There unfolds that dark intensity characteristic of the Iberian musicians of the period, certainly influenced by the rigorism of the Catholic Church in the kingdom. Victoria demonstrates his immense virtuosity of writing while preserving a restraint that goes straight to the heart. Drawing on the perfection and the proverbial commitment of his ensemble Cantoría, Jorge Losana reconstructs Lamentations of Tenebrae, drawing on these sublime works.
