Overview
Presented by Philippe Maillard Productions. Penitence and Prayer Penitential music offers particularly fertile themes for musical setting: grief, remorse, supplication to the Lord.
These subjects open up depths of spiritual and philosophical meditation, often resonating with the composers' own preoccupations. The Renaissance is, in this field, a true golden age, which The Gesualdo Six invite us to discover or rediscover.
At the heart of this programme, the deeply moving Lamentations of Jeremiah by Robert White, with their lines as spare as they are desolate, find a welcome echo in masterpieces by Byrd, Victoria or Guerrero, not forgetting the later but no less poignant Crucifixus by Lotti.
It goes without saying that The Gesualdo Six are the worthy heirs of the greatest English polyphonic ensembles, with striking perfection but also that expressive intensity which belongs to them alone.
