A land of encounters and cultural mixing, South America brings together a multitude of languages, histories and cultures that give it exceptional diversity. Its musical traditions are one of the most exciting expressions of this.

When the Spanish arrived in America at the end of the 15th century, European Baroque heritage met local practices. Rhythms, dances and sun-drenched colors inspired European composers, while musicians from the continent appropriated and transformed these influences from elsewhere.

Throughout the centuries, these exchanges continued and South America continued to assert a teeming musical identity. In Argentina, it was notably tango that triumphed in the 20th century and radiated even to Europe.
