Overview
A flower of maturity, the buds of an early career: César Franck's Quintet and Lili Boulanger's chamber works make up a moving range of Belle Époque French music. The broad, dramatic architecture of the Piano Quintet in F minor (1879), written by Franck at the age of fifty-seven, makes it the first great quintet in the French repertoire, restoring the genre to honour in France.
Lili Boulanger was nineteen when she became the first woman to win the prestigious Prix de Rome. The influence of Debussy and of Fauré, a friend of the family, pervades Nocturne and Cortège. Built on a single motif, D'un matin de printemps and D'un soir triste present a striking contrast between flourishing ardour and mournful gravity. Could one read in this diptych a metaphor for the tragic fate of the young artist whose career was so dazzling? She died at the age of twenty-four, in the very year she composed these two pieces.
