It seems to begin as a thoroughly serious recital, but very quickly the singer breaks off, opens up and confides. For this singer is above all a man of his time, a man whose hilarious love life we follow as he plunges into the repertoire of French comic song, from the Années Folles to the Left Bank cabarets of the postwar years. His pianist, Christophe Manien, accompanies him and offers him silent replies. Their total complicity completes the transformation of this recital into a genuine music-hall show, which Gilles Bugeaud, with his deadpan humour, has built around songs composed by the greatest specialists of the genre - Bourvil, Fernandel, les Frères Jacques, Boby Lapointe or Jean Yanne - but also some rare gems to discover! J'ai mangé ma fourchette enjoyed a triumphant three-year run at the Festival d'Avignon.
