Music beyond words
Inspired by the French Romantic poet Aloysius Bertrand and by the fantastical atmosphere dear to Hoffmann, Ravel goes beyond his original framework to draw us into a sound world previously unknown to him. Once we have crossed the threshold of this realm of the imagination, we can do nothing but bow before the one who reigns over it as a master, by the very constraint imposed on him by the weakness of his hearing: Beethoven and his final sonata, Op. 111, which he could only hear in spirit. Finally, we will rediscover the poetic and Romantic spirit of Adam Mickiewicz, through Chopin's Ballades, whose construction is so powerful that it does without any explicit reference: "let them guess", he used to say.
