This adaptation of Notre-Dame de Paris takes place in a world without a precise era, yet one that everyone recognises. The cathedral is no longer a frozen monument; it becomes a body of metal, a vertical bastion, a theatre of stone where everything irredeemable in humanity crashes down: misery, solitude, desire, power. There is no historical reconstruction here. No folklore, no lace, no “romantic Gypsy”. Only men and women thrown into a society that devours them. Esmeralda is not a muse. She is a survivor. Quasimodo is not a pure soul. He is a silence. Frollo is not a monster. He is a broken man. Phoebus is not a hero. He is an emptiness. Clopin is not a king. He is a wretch. Each character struggles to exist in a world where beauty, morality, justice are nothing more than masks. The play focuses on six main figures (Esmeralda, Frollo, Phoebus, Quasimodo, Clopin, Gringoire), stripped to the bone, and follows their inexorable fall. Love becomes a punishment. Religion, a repressed urge. Justice, a theatre of execution. The text draws on Hugo's breath, his rage, his visions, his violence, but is entirely rewritten. It is a lyrical and brutal language, traversed by metaphors and suffocating silences. The style is inspired by contemporary European theatre: breaks in tone, irruptions of realism, addresses to the audience, embodied silences, violent sound or light framing, in the vein of an Ostermeier-style theatre. At the heart of the show, desire is political. To love, here, is to put one's body at stake in a society that denies the poor, despises women, ridicules deviants. It is not an eroticised Esmeralda that we will see, but a young beggar, guilty of having danced, delivered to the whims of a priest in crisis, an icy soldier, and a blind populace.
