Notre-Dames de Paris

Presented by Le Théâtre de l'épée de bois. This adaptation of Notre-Dame de Paris unfolds in a world with no precise era, yet one that everyone recognises.

The cathedral is no longer a frozen monument; it becomes a body of metal, a vertical bastion, a theatre of stone where everything humanity has that is irrecoverable is crushed: misery, loneliness, desire, power. There is no historical reconstruction here.

No folklore, no lace, no “romantic Gitane”. Only men and women thrown into a society that devours them. Esmeralda is not a muse. She is a survivor. Quasimodo is not a pure soul. He is a silence. Frollo is not a monster. He is a broken man. Phoebus is not a hero. He is a void.

Clopin is not a king. He is a wretch. Every character struggles to exist in a world where beauty, morality and justice are nothing but masks.

The play tightens around six principal figures (Esmeralda, Frollo, Phoebus, Quasimodo, Clopin, Gringoire), stripped down to the bone, and traces their inexorable fall. Love becomes a punishment. Religion, a repressed impulse. Justice, a theatre of execution.

The text draws on the breath of Hugo, his rage, his visions, his violence, but is entirely rewritten. It is a lyrical and brutal language, running through metaphors and suffocating silences.

The style draws on contemporary European theatre: abrupt shifts of tone, irruptions of realism, direct address to the audience, embodied silences, violent sound or lighting frames, in the line of a theatre in the manner of Ostermeier. At the heart of the show, desire is political.

To love, here, is to put one's body at stake in a society that denies the poor, despises women and ridicules deviants.

What we will see is not an eroticised Esmeralda, but a young beggar, guilty of having danced, delivered to the whims of a priest in crisis, a glacial soldier, and a blind crowd.
