La fin du monde est une idée sans avenir - Julien Vella / Groupe Caute

Julien Vella and Groupe Caute bring Robert Musil’s monumental, unfinished novel L’Homme sans qualités to the stage.

Robert Musil’s L’Homme sans qualités appeared in two parts, in 1930 and 1932. In this immense, unfinished work, the Austrian author ironically examines the decline of the semi-fictional empire of Cacania at the dawn of the 20th century and, through it, the inevitable collapse of European culture on the eve of the First World War.

Julien Vella and Groupe Caute have chosen to bring this monumental novel to the stage, prioritising the questions that run through it over the plot: how to live in an age of profit, nationalism and war? How can a young generation defy cynicism and nostalgia to invent its own language and resist the decay that threatens it?

Like the book, which blends registers — satire, narrative, essay, learned prose and frenzied metaphysics — they bring together fragments of song, dance, clown routines, pantomime and stand-up in a succession of tableaux. And, like the novel, they stubbornly refuse to conclude. What is at stake here is not the end of a world, but a resolute attempt to bring another one into being. Caught between irony and fervour, disaster and desire, the stage becomes a living laboratory where history, far from being finished, is being written before our eyes — and invites us to take part in it.
