The Music is Our Sanctuary evening celebrates the legacy of the Mizell Brothers, visionary producers who revolutionised 1970s jazz-funk (from Motown to Blue Note) and inspired modern hip-hop.

This spacey, cinematic groove is revived today by Aldorande (led by Virgile Raffaëlli and Florian Pellissier), a benchmark of French jazz-funk signed to Favorite Recordings.

After propelling the Jackson 5 to the top of pop at Motown (I Want You Back, ABC), the two brothers took the reins of the legendary Blue Note label to inject their futuristic vision: soul with a haunting quality, cosmic synths and airy choirs carried by heavy basslines.

By shaping the masterpieces of Donald Byrd (Black Byrd, Places and Spaces) or Johnny Hammond (Gears), they unwittingly invented the raw material that hip-hop's sorcerers (from J Dilla to Madlib) would sample on repeat decades later.
