"Our present tends to greatly simplify, even reduce the human being to a binary of body and soul.
The spiritual dimension, in the spiritual sense of the term, is however inherent to the human condition in general, and even more so for a musical human, both performer and improviser. It therefore seemed to me essential to work on a work that would symbolize this idea.
My research crystallized around Olivier Messiaen and this extraordinary work, The Nativity of the Lord, which my friend Emil Spányi introduced me to. As the composer states, he sought "emotion and sincerity first. But transmitted to the listener by sure and clear means".
Messiaen abundantly uses the elements of his usual musical language, in particular the modes of limited transposition, as well as Hindu rhythms. It constitutes a major change, even a revolution in organ music of the time.
