Like Haydn's The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross a century later, Buxtehude's Membra Jesu Nostri, a composer who greatly inspired Johann Sebastian Bach, is an astonishing piece.
A unique form of musical anatomy, the seven cantatas composed on a medieval text are all named after a part of Jesus Christ's body wounded by his crucifixion.
