A mirror of the hopes, struggles and refrains of the 1990s, during which the Africolor nights became the crucible of so many artistic careers. Here, Danyèl Waro; there, Angélique Kidjo; elsewhere, Femi Kuti who comes to sit at the table of the Malian divas Oumou Sangaré and Nahawa Doumbia. The Christmas nights at the TGP accompanied a decade of pride in African music that set the souls and bodies of a generation alight, a generation whose children now claim their lineage. Afro-descendant, from here and not from elsewhere, these evenings affirm identities endlessly recomposed, reshaped by the flows of musical winds blowing as much from West Africa and Johann Sebastian Bach as from funk and blues. Who better than Nina Tonji to take up the gauntlet and make the Africolor generations talk to one another by revisiting standards, anthems, lullabies and songs of praise? As much at home with Mozart as with Toto Guillaume, she serves as musical director of this afro-ascendant creation, joined by wordsofAzia, founder of Bhété Jazz, and many others. They chart a new continent, mapping the musical and spiritual crossroads that shape them, shedding both Orients and Occidents, both Norths and Souths: feet planted in Seine-Saint-Denis, heads in the harmony of the spheres, the skins of the drums and the bodies stretched towards a beautiful and simple idea: we are here and we will not move.
