Overview
Gurshad Shaheman returns to the Théâtre de la Bastille with Cabaret Téhéran, summoning the flamboyant voices of Iranian pop culture from the 1950s to the present day, in the grand tradition of drag cabaret.
Through a gallery of legendary female singers, whom he embodies alone on stage, Gurshad Shaheman blends cult songs, fragments of history and autobiographical glimpses to conjure up a free and sensual Tehran, brutally swept away by the 1979 revolution and the establishment of the Islamic regime.
True to his writing, which sits at the intersection of the intimate and the political, Gurshad Shaheman makes the stage a space of reappearance and reclaiming. His body transforms, haunted by the ghosts of a forbidden culture.
And with a flair for joyful celebration like no one else's, he turns the stage into a contagious burst of liberty.
