An emblem of a female desire that asserts itself, Carmen speaks, through its famous arias, of freedom, violence and power.
In the new production by Emmanuelle Bastet, created with the Shanghai Opera House, the director whose La Bohème was seen on the Grand-Théâtre stage in 2024 returns to the source of the story and gives new psychological depth to the character of Don José.
In Seville, in a society where the Romani people and Spanish society coexist more or less comfortably, Carmen is, in Emmanuelle Bastet's words, a "matter of sensation".
The burning sun, the dust, the skin, the breath, the smell of tobacco, the brushing of fabrics and the tinkling of jewellery: everything here serves the drama, the dizziness of desire and the sting of jealousy.
A popular opera of absolute modernity in which passion does not sublimate but ravages.
Co-production Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Opéra National de Bordeaux in collaboration with the Shangyin Opera House Workshops of the Opéra National de Bordeaux and the Shangyin Opera House Opera filmed for broadcast as part of Bordeaux Live Opéra, on NoA and ICI Nouvelle-Aquitaine
