About — The venue

The Grand-Théâtre de Bordeaux is a neo-classical opera house.

Commissioned by Marshal de Richelieu and built by architect Victor Louis, it was inaugurated on 7 April 1780 with a performance of Jean Racine's Athalie.

Listed as a historic monument in 1899, evoking Antiquity through its peristyle, the neo-classical building, measuring 88 by 47 metres, fits within the opulent Bordeaux urban planning inherited from the Age of Enlightenment. It houses an auditorium seating around a thousand people, a perfect example of an Italian-style theatre.

After more than two hundred years of varied uses and successive transformations to its halls and surroundings, it regained both its original blue, gold and white marble interior decoration during its last restoration in 1991, and its vista as a temple of the muses with the redevelopment of place de la Comédie and cours du Chapeau-Rouge in 2006.

The Grand-Théâtre is today the home of the Opéra national de Bordeaux, which programmes its opera season and ballets there. It also hosted the symphonic concerts of the Orchestre national Bordeaux Aquitaine before the opening of the Auditorium de Bordeaux in 2013.
