Christophe Marguet

In 1962, Brendon Grimshaw bought the uninhabited island of ‘Moyenne’ in the Seychelles and settled there permanently ten years later.

He lived alone there for thirty-nine years until his last breath, away from the consumerist world and in total immersion with nature and the surrounding wildlife.

With the help of René Lafortin, they built his house, created almost five kilometres of trails, replanted 16,000 trees, attracted 2,000 new bird species and introduced more than a hundred giant tortoises.

In 2008, the island became a National Park and now shelters two-thirds of the Seychelles’ fauna. This modern-day Robinson Crusoe lived an incredible love story with nature, one that sheds light on the human capacity to make life essential, harmonious, simple and useful.

This exemplary act of resistance suggests a direct parallel with our artistic work, as a necessary and vital withdrawal into oneself, indispensable to creation.

Deeply moved by this man’s commitment, Christophe Marguet has written an original repertoire evoking the daily life Brendon Grimshaw might have lived on his island.
