Ludwig van Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 1 in C major, Op. 15 (1789)

To honour historical fidelity, a Beethoven piece from before the "heroic period" frames this programme. It offers the chance to explore a lesser-known facet of a composer who learns, absorbs and transforms, while already asserting a very personal energy. Piano Concertos Nos. 1 and 2 show two complementary faces. The first favours buoyancy, the frankness of gesture and rhythmic invention, whereas the second places greater emphasis on the liveliness of dialogue and the art of surprise. The pianist Aristo Sham, gold medallist of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, will draw on his virtuosity and sensitivity to carry these concertante pages. Between these two landmarks, Mozart's Symphony No. 30 offers an ideal counterpoint: elegance of form, restrained theatricality, mastery of timbre. Nothing illustrative, but rather a triangulation in which Mozart is a point of reference and Beethoven a force of extension. Don't miss the chance to meet Holly Hyun Choe after the performance!
