Overview
Through a repertoire that spans eras and cultures, the COSU explores the close links between music, dance and movement.
Dance and music can each flourish on their own, but when they meet, they merge into a single impulse: to mark time and to inhabit it. This dialogue is the thread of a programme conceived as a dance in four movements. It first considers how today's music takes hold of the dances of yesterday and, with them, the memory of danced movement. The concert then becomes an invitation to dance, before travelling through musical folklore: everywhere, music and dance accompany festivals, rites and gatherings. From Slovenia to the Samoan islands, from Norwegian slåtter to Indian konnakol, these collective practices pass through the generations and nourish contemporary creation. And because one must, after all, dance, the fourth movement belongs to the body, our first instrument. Gesture becomes rhythm, the voice becomes percussion, in a quest for what, within movement, can become sonic material.
