Overview
David Binney at La Petite Halle
DAVID BINNEY & LOUIS COLE
Some encounters are ones we are particularly happy to host. On 5 November, saxophonist David Binney returns to La Petite Halle with Louis Cole for an evening that promises plenty of jolts.
With more than 30 albums as a leader and 400 recordings to his name, David Binney is a singular voice in contemporary jazz. An alto sound that sticks with you, compositions that surprise, and an ever-intact urge to break new ground: his music offers a serious playground.
And for venturing into it with him, Louis Cole is rather well placed. Co-founder of KNOWER, artist on Brainfeeder and collaborator with Thundercat, the drummer combines formidable groove with a delightfully free approach to playing. It can move very fast and very far, without ever losing what makes us nod our heads.
Around Binney's universe, the two accomplices answer each other, push each other on and build the tension. Dazzling improvisations, unexpected detours and a shared taste for controlled chaos: people come as much for their compositions as for what happens between the notes.
Hearing them as a duo, up close, here at home: that's an evening we were eager to offer you.
